Eco-Cultural Explorations
Experience and explore the fascinating nature of the Atacama Desert in a 5-day adventure, visiting unforgettable destinations such as the Moon & Death Valleys, the Tatio Geysers, Pakana Monks, Salt Lagoons, and much more!
San Pedro de Atacama, with its wonderful clear night sky, unique flora & fauna, as well as its history and culture, is immersed in the magical landscapes of the most arid desert on Earth.
In the morning (8:30 AM), we will drive from San Pedro de Atacama to the Hierbas Buenas archaeological site, a place where three mountain chains meet. Here, we will find ancient petroglyphs from different pre-Columbian indigenous cultures that traveled from the Andean Mountain Range to the Pacific coast with large llama caravans, packed with diverse products from each vegetation level (High Plateau, Pre-Mountain Range & Pacific Coast).
From here, we will continue to the unforgettable and beautiful Rainbow Valley, named for its multicolored and diverse tectonic layers exposed after centuries of strong earthquakes, floods, and wind—a truly unique site!
We shall return to San Pedro de Atacama at midday approximately.
Includes: Mineral water & snacks.
In the afternoon (15:00 hrs), our team will take you to the calypso waters of the Cejar Lagoon. This lagoon is surrounded by salt formations that enhance the entire landscape, and the saltiness of its water allows us to float effortlessly, just like in the Dead Sea.
We will also visit the Ojos del Salar Lagoons and the Tebinquinche Lagoon in the northern zone of the Atacama Salt Flat. We shall return to your lodging at approximately 20:00 hrs.
Includes: Mineral water & cocktail at sunset.
Note: This visit can also be done on mountain bikes (beginner to intermediate level). Please indicate if you want to integrate mountain biking into your adventure.
In the evening (starting time: between 21:00 and 22:00), you will begin an unforgettable astronomical circuit, departing from your lodging in San Pedro de Atacama to an area with total absence of artificial light. We will reach the astronomical facilities, where we will learn about both ancient and modern astronomy and have the opportunity to observe the stars through telescopes in the clean, cloudless sky of the Atacama Desert—the best place in the world for stargazing.
Note: This service can be canceled in case of cloudy skies or lack of visibility. In this scenario, the outing could be moved to another day of your program, depending on weather conditions.
Includes: Hot beverage, snacks, and transportation to and from your lodging.
In the morning (9:00 AM), we will drive south to find, between majestic mountain chains, the beautiful Andean village of Toconao, known for its warm and friendly inhabitants, textiles, and incredible way of cultivating the desert.
From here, we shall continue to the impressive Atacama Salt Flat, the third largest in the world, where three species of flamingos, as well as other Andean birds, feed and find refuge in this unique and isolated ecosystem. We will then drive up the international road towards the Sico Pass (Argentina), gradually climbing into the High Plateau.
On the way, we will pass by the small farming village of Socaire, filled with terrace plantations, before arriving at the impressive High Plateau Lagoons, Miscanti and Miñiques, at 4,350 meters above sea level. Surrounded by volcanoes and fantastic panoramic views, we will contemplate the biodiversity of this area and the different altitude levels we have crossed.
We will continue to the Talar Salt Flat and the Piedras Rojas viewpoint to enjoy the breathtaking landscape from a unique observation point.
We shall return to San Pedro in the afternoon (approximately 17:30 hrs).
Includes: Mineral water, snacks & outdoor lunch.
Very early in the morning (5:00 AM), we will take an old sulfur mining road until we reach an altitude of 4,350 meters above sea level, where the Tatio Geysers will display their magnificence.
At El Tatio, we will observe different geothermal formations and the region’s rich flora and fauna, including vicuñas, vizcachas, and guayatas. After an incredible sunrise and exploration of the geyser field, we will enjoy breakfast surrounded by this breathtaking landscape.
Later, we will continue through the High Plateau until reaching the viewpoint of the small village of Machuca, home to only five inhabitants.
On our way back, we will have the chance to observe endemic giant cacti, known as Echinopsis atacamensis, found in a small oasis called Guatin.
We shall return to San Pedro de Atacama at midday approximately.
Includes: Mineral water & breakfast at sunrise.
After a fascinating Atacama Experience, we will depart from your hotel to Calama Airport in time for your departure flight.
Includes: Mineral water.
Note: We recommend booking departure flights from Calama Airport after 15:00 hrs for this program.
